Consisting of primarily traditional black and white photographs, this ongoing project explores the expressive possibilities offered through photography of portraits and figure studies in and around water. The images are collaborative efforts between myself and the models--and involve extensive input and feedback from the individuals pictured before, during and after the images are made

Palimpsest : A Palimpsest is a surface stripped of its original text and re-inscribed with a different text--with new ideas. The substrate for this project is a sixty five page chapter that I was compelled to remove from my dissertation as it neared completion--a difficult and painful experience. The analysis of authors who connect photography to the discourse of vision contained in the chapter was, and remains a foundational part of how I understand the making and viewing of photographs. The rising and falling influence of the ideas expressed by those authors is itself a palimpsestic process. Ideas are committed to paper and gain credence only to be covered over by the theories that follow and replace them. Palimpsest is a photographic project that acknowledges this process. It begins with a sheet pulled from the stack of edited pages from my dissertation. At first I physically scraped the surface of these pages with a razor blade removing the text to prepare the surface for re-use. A photograph of a ‘real-world’ palimpsestic surface was then printed onto the sheet. As the process progressed, I allowed digital processes to take over, and I experimented with overlaying one text onto another in digital editing software to remove sections and prepare the surface for the new image. Whether physical or virtual, Palimpsest explores the ways in which ideas and texts underlie all understandings of photography though they are often invisible and frequently obscured and altered by the technologies, images, ideas that follow.

Old Polaroids : These galleries contain scans of polaroids that I have accumulated over the years--many of which began shifting in color and tone from the moment they were created due to the inherent instability of the material. The brown and gold effects are a natural result of aging uncoated positive-negative polaroid prints. The green and blue images were made in daylight or in the studio with severly outdated Polaroid 64T. The color portrait of Adam and Robin are polaroid transfers. These are just a few of the numerous polaroids that I have accumulated over the years--images that speak both to process and photography's unique--and unstable--relationship with time.

25 on High : Forty years ago, two photographers traveled up and down High Street, Columbus Ohio to document the people, the times and the culture of the 70’s. Those photographs are being archived at the Ohio Historical Society. Today, one of those photographers has decided it’s time to revive the project and has gathered over two-dozen local photographers to showcase High St. - from beyond the southern outer belt to beyond the northern outer belt of the city. My section is downtown: from Nationwide Blvd to Fulton Street. We’re not quite sure where this project is going - what we do know is that these images will tell the tale of the vibrance of the communities that surround High Street Columbus.

Your Bio

With over ten years experience in photography education, I am committed to applying, exploring, and expanding the potential that digital and web-based technologies offer to the teaching and learning of image making. I have recently completed my doctorate in Art Education from The Ohio State University. The focus of my research is the discourse of vision, phenomenology, and how these ways of seeing offer insight into contemporary understandings of photography. This research is informed by and continually re-shapes my teaching and image-making practice. In addition to the Ph.D, I have a masters in photography from Purdue University, and a BA in journalism from Ohio State.
